A: The cohort year is the date the student should graduate from high school based on the date she/he entered high school. To calculate the cohort year, add four years to the date student first entered ninth grade (regardless of where he/she entered school). For example if a student enters ninth grade for the first time in 2013 his/her cohort year is 2017; if a student entered ninth grade for the first time in 2008 his/her cohort year is 2012. The cohort year NEVER changes. This is the one thing that remains the same. Grade level placement is based on the total number of credits the student has; this has nothing to do with the number of years student has been in high school.
